Make your CORE values mean something. Patrick Lencioni wrote an HBR article several years ago that did a great job of distinguishing Core values versus other types of values. He says Core values are those values that make your organization who you are. They are not the trite values that are often listed on plaques on walls of waiting rooms and hallways within organizations. Core values are the unique values that create your culture. Lencioni says values such as Honesty, Integrity, Quality are not core values but “Permission to Play” values. In other words, if you don’t have these base line values you don’t have “permission” to play on our team.
So take some time to re-visit your “Core” values and make sure they indeed are CORE to your organization.
